‘BEYOND: Visions of the Afterlife’
For my graduation project at The National Film and Television School, I curated and delivered a film season called ‘BEYOND: Visions of the Afterlife’, which explored how the afterlife is portrayed on screen. The season was hosted at Genesis Cinema in Mile End, London, and ran from the 30th of October to the 10th of November.
The season consisted of four feature film screenings, each with an introduction beforehand. The screening of Nine Days (2020) was followed by a Q&A with the film’s writer/director Edson Oda, which I moderated.
In order to deliver this season successfully, I worked with several partner organisations and secured screening rights and materials from a range of international rights holders and distributors. These included the BFI, Park Circus, and Televisa Mexico.
To promote the season, I engaged with film and cultural organisations, including The Japan Society and Cinema Mentiré, who introduced the screening of Macario (1960). Additionally, none of this would have been possible without the close collaboration between the Genesis Cinema staff and me, which included marketing and overall logistics of hosting the screenings.
I received really enthusiastic feedback from the audiences who attended the season and I’m eager to return to programming soon.
